Family Sponsorship

Are at least 18 years of age

Reside in Canada (Canadian citizens may sponsor while living abroad if they demonstrate an intention to return to Canada

Have not sponsored a spouse or partner within the last five years

Are not barred from sponsorship, and

Sign an undertaking with the Government of Canada.

An undertaking is a legally binding promise to provide financial support for the sponsored family member’s basic needs. The length of the undertaking depends on the relationship: • Spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner: 3 years • Dependent children over 22 years of age: 3 years • Dependent children under 22 years of age: 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first • Parents and grandparents: 20 years • Other eligible relatives: 10 years

Family Class (Outside Canada): Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor eligible close family members living outside Canada for permanent residence.

Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class: Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner who is living in Canada with valid temporary resident status

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP): Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents. This program operates on an annual intake and is invitation-based.

Dependent Child Sponsorship: Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children under 22 years of age for permanent residence.
