Study Visa
You do not need a study permit if you are coming to Canada for a program that lasts 6 months or less.
A Study Permit is a document that allows a foreign national to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to pursue studies in Canada. Applications must be approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) before traveling to Canada.
Processing times vary by country and are typically between 5 and 7 weeks. Government Study permit fee: $150 CAD
Eligibility Requirements:
Proof of funds to pay for tuition fees, living expenses (for the student and any accompanying family members), and return transportation.
Police certificate showing no criminal record (if required).
Medical examination demonstrating good health (if required).
Proof that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized period of stay.
Enrolment at a Designated Learning Institution: • Post-secondary institutions listed as DLIs by IRCC. • All primary and secondary schools in Canada are automatically designated.
Documents Required for the Application:
Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a DLI
Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter, when required (PAL / TAL / CAQ)
Proof of identity
Proof of funds
Letter of explanation outlining your reasons for studying in Canada
Medical exam results (if applicable)
Police certificate (if applicable)
Proof of custodianship, if the applicant is a minor
Additional documents, as required by the applicant’s country of residence
Completed official application forms
Obligations while Studying in Canada:
Make progress toward completing their program of study
Comply with all conditions listed on their study permit
Notify IRCC of changes such as school, address, or program of study; and
Report if they no longer meet the requirements of their study permit
Work While and After Studying:
If you hold a valid study permit and are enrolled full-time at a DLI, you may be eligible to work on-campus or off-campus. If authorized, your study permit will include a condition allowing you to work while studying. After graduation, you may be eligible to remain in Canada and work by applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), provided you completed a PGWP-eligible program. Government PGWP fee: $155 CAD If you are not eligible for a PGWP, you may still be able to work in Canada by obtaining another type of work permit. Any Canadian work experience gained may help you qualify for permanent residence in the future
